The X-Men are stalking five possible mutants, in the hope that they'll grow extra heads or develop acid sweat or somesuch. And Hope Summers, poster child for the 'One of us! One of us! Gooble gobble, gooble gobble!' brigade, is off looking into her own ... The cover by Terry and Rachel Dodson is Marvel's default 'heroes standing around hoping a movie poster artist is passing' bit, but the X-insert adds some interest, and it's certainly a pretty piece of comic art. ...

I love the way Hope's character is built in this issue as she meets her grandmother, but still tries to keep her distance. That is a neat twist that you don't see often in this type of story. I also really like that Hope's mother was a heroic firefighter and the implications that has. ... That definitely adds to her being aptly named and is a nice nod to the idea of her being the next in line for the Phoenix mantle (though I think Rachel Summers is still somewhere). ...

Heather is working on two series right one--one is totally new, called Slayers, and the other is set in the Vlad Tod world and will take place in the summers in between the school years of the Vlad Tod books.
